I always did wonder about Michaelangelo's tendency not to portray overendowment: was it an honest reflection of self, or did he hope to impress by comparison when he himself disrobed?
Brendan, Somebody has probably written massive tomes about this. Do you suppose the artists were torn between anatomical accuracy and not wanting to obscure the real meaning of their works (i.e. by distracting the viewer)?
