    These are called "haniwa." From Wikipedia:"The Haniwa are terra cotta clay figures which were made for ritual use and buried with the dead as funerary objects during the Kofun period (3rd to 6th century AD) of the history of Japan."
    The haniwa in my photos are replicas, and there are about 400 of them at Heiwadai Park here in Miyazaki.

  3. They reminded me of "Spirited Away" (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi), by Hayao Miyazaki. Eerie, but beautiful.
