Fuck Jazz!!

Shit. Ten days and counting, and that new Whitesnake album still sounds pretty fucking good.

Yes... I feel the power...

[UPDATE: I forgot to add this tune. My bad. Like it or show yourself for the wimp you really are!!]

Whitesnake-Lay Down Your Love

Now wash your hands.

  1. This one isn't playing for me.

Which, when I consider what I remember of Whitesnake, can only be considered A Good Thing.

Whoops. There it goes. Thank goodness for comments in separate windows.

    ...

    Or not.

Okay. After listening to this tune, my memory remains unchanged: Three words: Wah Nah Bees.

Sorry we don't agree on this one. It's just that I've heard a million metal bands do the same thing as well or better: attempt to imitate Led Zep with nothing new to offer except glossy overproduction.

I now depart this fine site to dispense further grumpiness elsewhere. Nothing wrong with you liking a song that I don't, as I doubt you need to be reassured.

  2. Brendan,

No problems about disagreeing on a band, that's for sure (except I'm right, you're wrong, nyah nyah...!!).
    ;-)

    Seriously, a couple of points:
--I don't want anyone to get the impression that I think this album is a monument of rock, or anything. For me it's just a piece of tasty ear candy that reminds of the good ole days!
--I think "wannabe" is a bit strong a phrase to use about a guy who was the lead singer on a couple of pretty good Deep Purple albums in the 70s. I also think you're hearing something different than I am. Sure, Zep tropes abound, but the band doesn't really sound anything like Zep, nor do I think they're really trying to.
--I think as an example of a type (i.e. blues/Zep influenced metal), it's as fine an album as I've heard in a while--great performances by the band, well-arranged tunes, nice production, nothing too cringe-inducing (as bands of this type are frequently prone to do), etc.

That's basically where I'm coming from in relation to this album!

Sigh, I could argue about rock all day... [!]

  3. Sigh, I could argue about rock all day ...

I used to be like this, too, but now I'm only inclined to do so every so often, and I always feel silly afterwards. Hope you took my "rage" in the tongue-in-cheek sense intended.

  4. I gave it about a minute (I suspect that you can take the other 5 as read), and my thoughts were

    1) it's practically a pure splice between Led Zep and Queen (the harmonics at the beginning are pure "Fat Bottomed Girls"), the riffs are trademark Zep.

    2) It achieves exactly what it sets out to do, i.e. replicate the high-gloss (just as you say, Bren) sound of Whitesnake's best-selling period ("Is This Love" / "Here I Go Again" etc). It's aimed squarely at fans, not at critics.

    3) It's good, but to be honest, the originals were enough for me. Nonetheless, I had the time of my life last Saturday programming "Still of the Night" in all its 6-minute glory onto the jukebox in a trendy London pub, and watching the 18-year-olds look at me as if I were a martian whilst I air-guitared. Those who hadn't left already, of course.

  5. Tafkass,
I couldn't see the Queen for the Zeppelin, but I think you're spot on. As I mentioned the Brendan, I don't think the newest Whitesnake is going to re-invent rock, it just happened that I heard it right at that moment when that was exactly what I wanted to hear.

  6. Let's leave the attempted reinvention of rock to youngsters (who inevitably, once they get older, broaden their horizons and care less about fashion or "attitude", discover that we were right all along...)
