Can it get any better than this?

  1. Ah, I see you've heard. I'm kind of surprised the news would spread as far as Japan, it doesn't seem to be that urgent over here. Why is that, do you think ... ? I'm beginning to have more and more respect for that Mayan calendar thing.

  2. Glenn,
I don't actually know how much coverage The Gulf spill is getting over here because I don't follow the Japanese media very closely. However, when I see stuff like this in the NY Times:

BP later acknowledged to Congress that the worst case, if the leak accelerated, would be 60,000 barrels a day, a flow rate that would dump a plume the size of the Exxon Valdez spill into the gulf every four days.

I figure the shit has hit the fan.

  3. BP has lied every step of the way. Whatever stats they publish one day, they will revise upward the next. Every day!

  5. Hi Rick, Thanks for featuring this event. There are a lot of creative ideas being discussed but nobody will feel any better until the big leak is finally plugged or diverted or whatever they do. Here is a useful timeline of how this is playing out. sp

  6. I was leaning toward offshore drilling until this accident reminded me that there is really no such thing as a "safe" anything.
Nuclear, Oil, Coal...all are very dangerous to man and the environment.
All it takes to precipitate a disaster is an equipment malfunction or a careless worker.
And one accident can cause immeasurable damage.

    It isn't worth the cost.

We should turn our focus away from oil to other forms of energy that do not create environmental disasters.

  7. Hi Sussah,
Thanks for the link. I've been interested in/concerned about your part of the world since a bunch of strange coincidences that happened around the time of Katrina (meeting Glenn online was the catalyst, and of course you know of the historical connection between Nova Scotia--my home, and Louisiana).

    Anon.,
Thanks for your comment. Believe me, I'm no Greenpeace/tree-hugger type. At the same time I'm not generally wont to think it's a good idea to shit in one's bed or piss in one's bath. (Er, that was meant to suggest that you don't have to post anonymously! Either way, c'mon back!)
