Looks like a mad scientists lair, and I think he's generating a "mind-sweep" ray, that works even through a picture of it, 'cause I was gonna say something about this one earlier, scrolled down a ways and came back - poof! Completely forgot what it was! Must be a mind-sweeper in there.
This looks almost like an echo of the black Knight's helemt - as a front, somewhat forbidding.
