Offerings

  1. This is fascinating. What happens to the food after you've gone away? What are those donut-like parts and what are they made of? Are they edible? If I were in Japan, I'd be offending lots of gods cause I'd be stuffing my face with their stuff.

    Those are called mochi. It's basically rice pounded to a pulp with a bit of water and then cut and shaped. It's a traditional food this time of year. I usually pop it in the toaster oven for a couple of minutes and then put a bit of soy sauce on it.
    I'm not actually sure how long they leave it there, but I think animals get most of what's left outside.
