  1. hey rick - hope you don't mind me dropping by to tell you about this documentary i watched last night on bbc4 - naoki, part-time japanese postman, one of the most compelling characters i have ever come across in a documentary. the british filmmaker had been living in japan for 2 yrs prior to making it, he had been unable to make the film he wanted and ended up with the gem of naoki. would be interested to know what you think? (though, i have no idea if you will be able to re-watch...) nasim

  2. Hi Nasim,
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately it doesn't look like the BBC will allow viewing outside the UK. From the description on the website it looks like an interesting film.
There's a lot of stuff on TV here with perhaps similar content, but it almost always ends up being a big sob-fest (i.e. pandering, maudlin crap). I'd be interested to see a British filmmaker's treatment of this type of story.
There's an outside chance I might catch it on BBC World, but more likely it'll show up on NHK someday. I'll keep an eye out!

  3. damn! that's a pity, it's such a great wee film, naoki is eccentric as hell, a fabulous character - this is not maudlin at all, purely gentle and intelligent film making.
