What are you smiling about?

Apparently a fight broke out after a public screening of Japan's World Cup loss to Australia last night. According to the report, at the end of the match "[...] about 10 Japanese fans began fighting, with some accusing each other of smiling even though Japan lost." Luckily for me, I watched the game at home. Even more luckily, my (Japanese) wife was sleeping...

  1. So smiling is agressive behaviour for Japanese? That's nothing, after a recent boxing match here, one guy got killed in a fight outside the pub afterwards.

  2. Salaamat,
guys and sports...tsk. can't pretend i can relate, my brothers made sure I grew up with a healthy disdain of sport addicts:p

you have to talk about Japan, I saw a couple of posts down you were struggling with it. I want to know what are the joys, the intricacies, the downsides...what do you miss most about canada, how life is different now, etc.

are you married to a japanese lady? do you get to visit "back home often"?

sorry I haven't read through your archives, so you prolly dealt with all this before (?)

Anywho, thanks for stopping by my "crib"; I love guests:)

  3. Hi Maliha,
Thanks for dropping by. Yeah, I guess I've decided to write mostly about Japan and my reaction to it on this blog. Love/hate relationships are difficult to articulate, as you may know... I wish I could write with your *warmth*. I can't give a higher compliment...

  4. This sounds like some of my kids crazy behavior. Can't tell you how many time's I've heard "HE'S LOOKING AT ME". Or "HE'S SMILING AT ME". My response "and the problem with this is............?" Now I expect this kind of behavior out of juvenile delinquents, but adults?
