A volcano, Shinmoe Dake, which I think is about 60 kilometers from Miyazaki City, erupted yesterday. There doesn't seem to be much news about this in English, but there's some good info and cool footage here.
Things have been rumbling a bit around here the past couple days. There is no danger at all here in Miyazaki. I'd sure like to take a drive up that way this weekend though...
I took these from the top of my condo.
You guys get everything over there. Oh, wait ... never mind.
ReplyDeleteGlenn,
ReplyDeleteYou saved me from saying it!
This reminds me of when I lived in Mexico City. Most of the year you couldn't see the mountains at all, but some mornings I'd wake up and Popocatapetl was just there.
ReplyDeleteMichele,
ReplyDeleteThis is the closest I've been to an actual erupting volcano. Not sure I'd want to live much closer than this!
Pretty amazing. Are you able to notice it other than as a sight on the horizon? That is, are you seeing ash deposited, or can you smell it?
ReplyDeleteHere's a satellite's view (which I think I came across thanks to a tweet from Rick).

ReplyDeleteI see by your latest post that my question above has been answered.
ReplyDeleteBrendan,
ReplyDeleteYeah, it looks pretty clear this morning, but last night the air was pretty dusty. It's quite bad closer in.
Hope it passes soon.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, here are some more cool pictures: "Pictures: Volcano Lightning Electrifies Japan Eruption." (That are probably easier to enjoy for those of us living a bit farther away, I admit.)
