    Just curious, but what is happening in the second picture?

    Not being well-acquainted with Buddhism, I can't really tell you! You probably noticed that this is a closer view of what's between the two statues in the first pic. I noticed similar little shrine-like scenes all over Chiang Mai when I was there. If I had to guess, the figures represent someone (or deity?) to be remembered, and the cups are offerings, possibly filled on a regular basis (and certainly the "shrine" itself would be maintained regularly or maybe even daily). Be advised, though, that I'm extrapolating from what little I know of Shintoism, which is really a completely different religion!
